The Switch
There was a moment on Sunday when I felt the passion of this Chiefs Offense. Did you catch it? It was a clear moment to notice if you follow the Red and Gold. Some of the experts that watch this team talk about the “switch” or Playoff Mahomes, and it’s not clear to me if such a thing exists, but I can tell you that whatever that is, we saw it for a moment on Sunday vs the Bills.
As I’m thinking about switches, I wonder how little I like to switch many things. What about you?
For example, my Hair Stylist has known me for years; I’d hate to switch, wouldn’t you? I mean, who would I tell my stories to? Here’s another one, and this one was really impactful to me; what about your favorite Pizza place? You know which one I mean right? Your go-to Pizza place. Mine closed down without conferring with me in advance – imagine the nerve? Just like that, one day they were open and the next day they were closed. I’m talking real life pizza trauma here! So, I had to go on a new quest to find a new one. Has that ever happened to you? What do you switch uncomfortably? These Chiefs have in the past shown us that there is a switch, this extra gear that they have, and as a fan and student of the game, this gives me all the encouragement I need to know that these Chiefs will be a factor in determining the 2025 Super Bowl Champ.
We’ve seen this Switch before; let me provide some color for my point. During last year’s Super Bowl vs the 49ers, the game went into overtime. On 3rd and goal deep in the red zone, Chris Jones forced Brock Purdy to unleash his sure TD pass to Juauan Jennings early, causing a misfire that led to a 49ers field goal. With the Chiefs trailing and a Field Goal or Touchdown needed, the Switch was flipped. MVPat took us on a majestic drive that resulted in a TD pass to Mecole Hardman and our back–to–back Super Bowl Title.
Another example is in the same season, the AFC Title Game vs the Ravens. On the First Drive, facing a 4th down at the Raven’s 42, MVPat whips a laser pass to find Kelce for a 15-yard gain, first down, and a clear punch to the Raven’s gut. That drive resulted in a touchdown and set the tone for the Chiefs to be crowned AFC Champs. These are in-the-moment got-to-have-it plays.
On Sunday vs the Bills, this moment happened when the Bills went up 23-14 in the 4th quarter. At this moment, a Chiefs let-up would basically end the game. No pressure right? Out steps MVPat and the Switch was turned on. He took us on a masterful drive, going 6 for 7, hitting 5 different receivers, culminating in a beautiful Touchdown to emerging reliable Tight End Noah Gray. Just like that, the score was 23-21. Game on! All the pressure swung to the Bills, who made some great plays to finish the Chiefs that day.
Take heart, Chiefs fans; if there was to be any defensive stop or field goal by the Bills in that situation, does anyone believe MVPat wouldn’t have found a way? The Switch is there. We saw it for a moment, on that 23-14 money drive. We didn’t need to discuss Left Tackle, our Right Tackle, or anything else. We simply needed to watch the master at work. I didn’t see anything on Sunday that would make me switch how I think about these Chiefs. Carolina is our next opponent, and it’s time for the Chiefs to restart. The goal was never undefeated. Let’s go!
