What’s your superpower?
It’s a compelling question, right?. In the Mission Impossible series, what’s Ethan Hunt’s superpower? Is it that he has nine lives? Is it sprinting? What about Ving Rhames’ superpower? Can he unlock any computer network? Or is it his fierce loyalty to Ethan Hunt? When you are in a group setting, this is a great icebreaker to ask, especially of a group of strangers. I know someone whose superpower is knowing the first 20 decimal places in the geometric expression pi. Of course, I had to test them on this! Chiefs Kingdom, as our team seems poised to go on a little run here, I wondered what the 2025 Chiefs superpower is?
The case for the defense. Ok, let’s not get carried away with last week’s domination of the Raiders, but the shutout was so one-sided that the Raiders ran 30 plays. The reason this is so interesting is that it’s the 2d fewest offensive plays ever allowed in the NFL. Ever. This defense is limiting some great NFL offenses. The week prior, the Chiefs defense held the Lions to 17 points. Can anyone dispute that the Lions are one of the top five offenses in the NFL? In making the case for the defense, it’s the Chiefs strong secondary play that is locking down opposing offenses that is such a catalyst. Brian Cook has assumed the Justin Reid safety role, and he is playing like QB1 of the secondary. Of course, we are getting steady greatness from Trent McDuffie, but BC6 is quietly getting the job done. An example is in the Lions game, with the teams going back and forth, and the Lions just coming out of halftime, BC6 comes up and stops a wide receiver screen to Jameison Williams, ending a drive and keeping the Chiefs comfortably in the lead by 10. This Chiefs Defense is currently in the top five in the NFL in points and yards allowed.
The case for the offense. In the last four games, this offense has steadily improved since the addition of Xavier Worthy, and last week, the addition of Rashee. During the previous four games, this Chiefs offense has led the league in yards per game at 421, and they are just getting started. What self-respecting Chiefs fan wasn’t on the edge of their seat waiting for the first moment that our super triplets were on the field for the first time together? And then just like that, it happened. Here’s how that first drive unfolded: a Pacheco Run, a throw to Trav, a Kareem run, a chunk pass to Trav, a short pass to Brashard (he continues to come!), a chunk to Noah Gray, a short run by Pop, and two short passes to Rashee finally ending in paydirt. Nine plays, six different Chiefs touching the ball, and it all came to life, EGE, Everybody’s Gotta Eat. Welcome to Showtime Chiefs Kingdom, the fun and fireworks are back. The NFL is officially on notice.
As I’m thinking of Superpowers, my mind wanders to one of history’s great characters from the Bible, with a great superpower. His name was Joseph. His life and story occupy a whopping 13 Chapters in the book of Genesis. He was mistreated, punished, left for dead, cheated, worked as a slave, and thrown into jail, yet despite his life’s hardships, he believed God was with him. His superpower was interpreting dreams, and when he finally unleashed it and learned to use it, he became the second most important person in all of ancient Egypt and saved his family and his people. The lesson in the life of Joseph is that despite life’s hardships, an unwavering faith in God saved him and his family. Can you imagine the moment he learned he had this superpower? That is the moment we find these 2025 Chiefs.
Our Chiefs are just now beginning to learn their superpowers. Rashee Rice, as we have all expected, makes all the difference in how defenses line up against our team, and opens up everything and everyone. In the upcoming game against Washington, I expect our Chiefs to experiment, stretch these superpowers, put up another 30-point performance, and for the defense to hold Washington under 20 points. In the last 25 years in the NFL, only three teams have been in the top five in both Offense and Defense. All of those teams went to the Super Bowl. It’s about to get very interesting around Kansas City. Let’s go!
