The Mission
Don’t you love the Mission Impossible series? There are so many parts of it that we never seem to get enough of. There’s always a scene when Ethan Hunt is sprinting. There’s always a scene where the mission message self-destructs, except for that one time when it didn’t. No matter what the film producers dream up, we always have the big three of Ethan, Luther, and Benji. This incredible Chiefs run feels like an impossible mission this year, where our big three are going to need to lead the way.
Just like the Mission Impossible movies, our Chiefs are on episode eight in the Mahomes era, and this Mission seems the most complicated yet due to the new competition in the AFC West, and the fact that the Chiefs started short-handed at Wide Receiver early in the season.
Chiefs Kingdom, we find ourselves sitting at 5 -4 at this point in the movie, and it feels like the outcome is in doubt. Nearly every single time our Chiefs have been in these must-win situations, somehow, incredibly, in this run, they have figured it out and taken us all on this incredible thrill ride that we don’t want to end. There was the 24-0 Playoff game deficit against the Texans at the very beginning of this success journey that they pulled out. There was the 13-second miracle. There was the hobbled Mahomes scamper on the way to Super Bowl title number two for MVPat, and then who can forget the road gauntlet vs the Bills, and the Ravens on the way to back-to-back. The point is, we expect the Chiefs to figure it out and take us. Why wouldn’t we expect it? It’s not like the Chiefs don’t always figure it out because they do. Which brings us to the most current situation we find ourselves in, an essential matchup against what some are calling the best defense ever? I saw the ’85 Bears, and I am not a believer in comparing these Broncos to that team. Nevertheless, the Broncos have played well and deserve to be where they are.
This impossible Mission reminds me of the Mission that God sent Jonah to complete. The people of Nineveh (an ancient city) were wicked in God’s eyes, so he instructed Jonah, who was a Hebrew prophet, to approach the King and the people of Nineveh to repent of their sins. The story continues in that Jonah was afraid of the people in Nineveh, and he decided not to follow God’s command; he disobeyed God and got on a boat headed 180 degrees in the opposite direction of Nineveh. God tracked Jonah down and created a big storm for Jonah’s boat causing the crew to throw Jonah overboard. Jonah ended up in the mouth of a Whale for three days. Can you imagine the stench, the darkness, the fear? Three days! After Three Days, the Whale spat Jonah out, and, of course, he reconsidered running from God and went to the people in Nineveh to preach God’s message to them. The people of Nineveh listened, obeyed, and were spared. Chiefs Kingdom, if God is directing you to move in a direction, the lesson is to move in that direction! God will make his plans clear to you! In Jonah’s case, his action saved an entire city!
Speaking of plans, since the Chiefs have been on a bye-week Andy Reid and Spags have had plenty of time to craft the second-half season plans and, more importantly, the plans for this upcoming Whale of a game vs the Broncos. Andy Reid’s teams are a whopping 22-4 after a bye-week, so it’s clear he will have our Chiefs ready. I’m as nervous as all of you out there are. Is this the end of the road for this era of Chiefs football for our big three? What exactly have we learned in this 7-year run? Our Chiefs will figure it out!
To win this game on Sunday, it feels alot like the Ravens’ matchup in the AFC title game of 2024 to me. Like this game against the Broncos, that game was on the road, and the stakes were massive. That Ravens defense was ferocious, and their quarterback Lamar Jackson was having an MVP season. Remember how the Chiefs did it? There were some quick passing strikes by MVPat, some fierce defense by the Chiefs, and, in the end, our Chiefs proved once again that anything is possible! This is the way! Let’s go!
