The Path

The Path

It sure is noisy listening to the national media and Chiefs fans who are fading this 2025 version of our Chiefs. You would think, with all the negative Chiefs chatter and the overload of messaging about the Dynasty being over, that during this 8-year run, we have never had to deal with adversity. In fact, this is not true. During this eight-year run, our Chiefs have dealt with adversity two times.
The first time our Chiefs were challenged was in the 2021 season. 2021 was the Super Bowl hangover season. After losing to the Buccaneers in the previous season’s Super Bowl, not unlike many Super Bowl losers, our Chiefs were in a bit of a tailspin to start the 2021 season. The Chiefs were 3-4, and many wondered if their reign had run its course. This was a Chiefs team that had won only one Super Bowl. In fact, the loss that put these Chiefs under .500 was so convincing that no one would have believed where they would end up. That Chiefs team walked into Nashville and was destroyed by the Titans 27-3. Against the Titans that day, there was no offense, no protection, only confusion and disappointment. So what did the Chiefs do? They went on to win seven of their last eight games and reach the AFC title game.
The second time our Chiefs were challenged was in the 2023 season. The 2023 season was up and down in many ways, but it was marked by the Christmas Day 2023 loss to the Raiders in Arrowhead. That loss to the Raiders was convincing; it was against an inferior team, and after the game, many “experts” believed the Chiefs had no chance of a deep playoff run. That turned out to be the beginning of these Chiefs going back-to-back with Super Bowl titles. These were difficult paths to travel but each team found their footing and went on deep playoff runs.
Speaking of paths reminds me of the path taken by Saul of Tarsus. He was travelling to Damascus on his way to arrest followers of Jesus. This Saul was no joke he had been known to order beatings and killings of anyone who followed Jesus. On Saul’s path to Damascus, Jesus met him and asked him why he was persecuting him. Jesus blinded Saul for three days. Who knows why three and not more? When Saul emerged after the three days, Jesus had given him a new name, Paul, and rather than arresting and beating Jesus’ followers, Paul became one of the most important people God used to spread his word. It is estimated that Paul’s writings about God and the goodness of Jesus have reached over 2.4 billion people. Chiefs Kingdom, the message here is that no matter what bad things are in your past, when you find God, he can use you to advance his kingdom.
Speaking of the bad things in the past, if our Chiefs can repair some of the mistakes they’ve been making, they’d be in a much better position for this stretch run.
As we look forward to the Colts game on Sunday. The Colts come into Arrowhead as one of the league leaders in yards per game and points per game. The Colts have a fierce attack led by Jonathan Taylor and Daniel Jones, who is mobile and has helped these Colts become a contender for the number one seed in the AFC. To stop these Colts, the Chiefs are going to have to stop Taylor from running wild and stop the passing game to tight end Tyler Warren, who is among the league leaders in receptions. The Chiefs are going to get plenty of practice in stopping tight ends in the next few weeks as they face some of the leagues best coming up. Tight end coverage has been a problem for our defense. I would expect to see Jaden Hicks or Chamarri Conner step up to stop the passing game. I would expect to see Leo Chenal in place, spying on the very mobile Daniel Jones. Stopping this high powered offense is going to be a huge challenge but hall of fame worthy defensive coordinator Spags will be ready with schemes that the Colts haven’t seen before.

Our Offensive path is seemingly simpler. The Chiefs need to run period. A more balanced offensive attack will settle down our Offense and get things started as we take this familiar path towards the post-season. On Offense, I am expecting to see much more production from Rashee, Hollywood, and Kareem Hunt. Let’s trust Andy Reid to unlock our high-powered offense. Let’s go!
